How to Know If It’s God’s Voice or Your Own Thoughts: 5 Ways the Holy Spirit Confirms His Word

I just got out of church and I’ve been weeping because God is so, so, so good. He spoke to me so strongly through the message today—it was confirmation upon confirmation.

Have you ever had a moment where God puts something on your heart and you know you’re supposed to be obedient, but it just doesn’t make sense? Maybe you’ve even delayed it for months—or years—because it feels intimidating or inconvenient. I’ve been there. And today, God shook me in the best way possible with a reminder that when the Holy Spirit confirms something, our job is to listen, trust, and obey.

Let’s talk about how we can tune in to those confirmations and actually respond to them.

Why the Holy Spirit's Confirmation Matters

God often asks us to do things that stretch us. Sometimes it doesn’t line up with what we think makes sense, but His Word reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5–6

When we rely on our own reasoning, we often drift off course. But when we yield to the Spirit’s leading—even in the small things—we walk into God’s best for our lives.

And here’s the truth: sometimes the things that seem “small” are actually huge in the Kingdom. Micro compromises—like gossip, “just one more drink,” or ignoring that little nudge—can keep us from the bigger destiny God has for us.

How God Confirms His Word to Us

Over the last 48 hours, I’ve seen God confirm something He’s been nudging me about for years. I wasn’t ready back then—I needed to grow up spiritually before I could walk it out. But now, He’s been weaving together confirmations that I can’t ignore.

Here are some of the ways He often confirms His direction in our lives:

  • Through His Word – Scripture always aligns with the Spirit’s voice. If what you’re sensing doesn’t line up with the Bible, it’s not from Him.

  • Through sermons or teachings – Sometimes the pastor says something that feels like it’s just for you. That’s the Spirit highlighting it.

  • Through repetition – If you keep hearing the same theme, verse, or idea pop up, pay attention. That’s often God emphasizing His point.

  • Through music or media – God can drop a song, lyric, or even a scene from a movie into your spirit. For me today, it was the song I Choose You that came out of nowhere—and I knew He was speaking.

  • Through peace or conviction – The Spirit may give you chills, tears, or an unshakable sense of “this is right.” Or, He may convict you about a compromise you’ve been brushing off.

Practical Tips for Listening to the Holy Spirit

  1. Pause and Pray – Don’t rush. Ask, “Lord, is this from You?” He loves to confirm.

  2. Line It Up with Scripture – God never contradicts His Word.

  3. Keep a Confirmation Journal – Write down the nudges, verses, songs, or sermons. Over time, you’ll see the thread He’s weaving.

  4. Don’t Justify Compromise – If He’s convicting you about something “small,” treat it as big. That’s His mercy protecting you.

  5. Say Yes, Even Before You Understand – Obedience often comes before clarity. When you draw the line in the sand and say, “Yes, Lord,” He equips you.

  6. Surround Yourself with Believers – Sometimes God will confirm through trusted friends who don’t even know what you’ve been wrestling with.

An Encouragement for You

Friend, if the Holy Spirit has been pressing something on your heart, don’t ignore it. Even if it feels scary or doesn’t make sense, trust that God knows what He’s doing. He is not trying to take something from you—He’s leading you into His best for you.

You don’t have to figure it all out before you say yes. Just take the next obedient step, and watch God flood you with love, confirmation, and strength along the way.

A Prayer for You

Holy Spirit, I ask You to come upon every reader right now. You know their struggles. You know the compromises they’ve been making, even in the small things. Give them clarity, conviction, and courage to obey what You’re asking of them. Strengthen their faith, Lord, and remind them that You always provide a way forward when we surrender to You. Thank You for Your confirmations and for never leaving us to figure it out alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.
