Is Your Phone Stealing Your Peace? How to Reset Your Dopamine and Put God First Again

We live in a world where the phone never leaves our hands. From morning scrolls to late-night swipes, our devices can slowly take control of our minds, our habits, and even our relationship with God. We can become addicted to the dopamine hit from a scroll session, but here’s the truth: your phone addiction doesn’t have to rule your peace—God can restore it.

This isn’t just about willpower. It’s about surrender. Let’s dive into what Scripture reveals and how you can reclaim your time, your focus, and your heart with Him.

When Phone Use Becomes a Dopamine Addiction

Your phone can seem harmless, but often it becomes:

  • A distraction from hearing God’s voice
  • A temporary comfort when we’re anxious, lonely, or stressed
  • A time thief that robs us of serving, connecting, and resting in God

It then becomes spiritual warfare the enemy uses to distract you from spending time with God, doing what God asked you to do, or giving God your first.

Like any other addiction, scrolling may soothe for a moment, but it ultimately leaves us emptier. That’s why this is more than a habit—it’s a heart issue.

The Lord reminds us in Isaiah 30:21:

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”

But how can we hear that voice if we’re always glued to a screen?

Putting God Back on the Throne of Your Heart

Quickly opening your phone and scrolling Instagram and Tiktok may seem innocent on the surface, but can quietly become an idol—something we run to before we run to God. Yet Scripture is clear:

Exodus 20:3 — “You shall have no other gods before me.”

This doesn’t mean throwing your phone away. It means being honest with yourself and being willing to say you’ve been automatically turning to it, potentially to try to comfort yourself from feeling difficult emotions or distract yourself or procrastinate. God wants your heart, and when you give your “first” (meaning attention, resources, time, etc) to something else before God, that’s when you have to re-evaluate where your heart’s priorities lie.

Practical Ways to Break the Cycle

Here are steps you can start today:

  1. Set Time Limits → Use an app that locks you out after your chosen screen time.
  2. Delete the Trigger Apps → If TikTok or Instagram consumes your time and you can’t help but open them (it’s become automatic), remove them.
  3. Start with God First → Replace your morning scroll with prayer or a Psalm. Giving your time to the Lord first is biblical. Mattew 6:33 reminds us that we should seek first His kingdom of righteousness.
  4. Physically Surrender Your Phone → Place it in your hands and pray, “Lord, I give this habit back to You.” Ask for strategies from heaven to change your habits.
  5. Rebuild Holy Habits → Use that reclaimed time to read scripture, journal, or serve others. Go on walks without your phone. Turn your phone off for a few hours and do a digital detox to clear your headspace let God fill it. Psalm 81:10 says: I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it

My Personal Testimony

When I began giving God my first moments instead of my phone, everything shifted. Spending even five intentional minutes with Him opened doors for healing in areas I didn’t even connect to my phone—disordered eating, anxiety, depression, and misplaced priorities.

God used this small act of obedience to completely realign my path. And He can do the same for you.

Deeper Roots: It's Not Just About the Phone

The phone is just the surface. Underneath may be:

  • Addiction to dopamine hits
  • Escaping discomfort instead of facing it with God
  • Fear of missing out, loneliness, or anxiety

But God’s correction is never harsh. It’s a loving hug, a gentle nudge back onto solid ground. He doesn’t just want you free from your phone; He wants you free in your spirit.

Biblical Prayer of Surrender

Take a moment to pray with me:

“Father, I surrender my phone habits to You. Remove every distraction sitting on the throne of my heart. Teach me to put You first in my time, energy, and attention. Help me to replace unhealthy scrolling with Your Word and Your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Final Encouragement

Phone addiction doesn’t define you. It’s simply a tool the enemy has used to steal your time and peace. But God is bigger. With His strength, your obedience, and the right support, you can break the cycle and walk in freedom.

Remember: every sacrifice you make for God is an open door for Him to move in your life. Put Him first today—you won’t regret it.
