For months, the Lord kept putting a burden on my heart:
“Too many people cannot hear God’s voice clearly — and it’s keeping them from walking in true alignment, peace, and purpose.”
If you’re honest, maybe you’ve felt this too.
You want to follow God…
You want to obey Him…
You want to walk in His peace…
But you still feel unsure. Unsure if the thoughts you hear are from God. Unsure if you’re aligned. Unsure what next step to take.
The Lord told me clearly: “My children are distracted, double-minded, and emotionally exhausted — and it’s blocking their ability to hear Me.”
This message is for anyone who wants to hear God more clearly, walk in deeper obedience, and finally feel the peace of the Holy Spirit resting on your life.
Let’s invite Him into this moment: (read this prayer out loud)
Heavenly Father,
Speak to me as I read.
Convict me, guide me, and soften my heart.
I surrender distractions, pride, and confusion.
I desire to be made pure. Transform me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Below are the 7 things God asked me to give up so I could hear His voice clearly. I believe these will bless you deeply — because each one changed my life.
1. Sleeping In
This was the first place God corrected me.
When you wake up late, you’re entering the spiritual battle of the day unprepared.
Every day is a battlefield — emotionally, mentally, spiritually.
If you wake up rushing, scrolling, or reacting, you skip the moment God wants to prepare you.
When I started giving God just five minutes each morning, everything shifted.
My spiritual clarity accelerated.
My peace deepened.
My mind was different.
That tiny act of obedience became an Ephesians 3:20 moment — God did exceedingly abundantly above all I expected.
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. 21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.
– Ephesians 3:20-21
But how can we hear that voice if we’re always glued to a screen?

2. Inconsistency Prevented Me From Hearing God's Voice Clearly
The Bible is clear:
Inconsistency is double-mindedness.
(James 1:5–8)
Double-minded Christians don’t receive from the Lord because their loyalty is divided.
When you start a goal but fall off…
When you commit but don’t follow through…
When you say “God first” but your actions say otherwise…
You unintentionally live in a lukewarm space.
God told me:
“Your inconsistency is saying this isn’t important enough.”
And it was affecting my spiritual life, my health, my calling — even the destiny of people assigned to me.
Consistency didn’t come from willpower.
It came from surrender.
3. Alcohol
This won’t be everyone’s conviction — but it was mine.
I didn’t realize it for years, but alcohol had a throne in my heart. The problem here is that nothing is supposed to have a place above the Lord. Even though I couldn’t see it with my own understanding, the Lord gently led me to the point where I knew without a doubt that he was telling me to set it down.
It was a coping mechanism, a comfort, a numbing tool.
God asked me to lay it down because He alone wanted to occupy that throne.
The clarity that came when I obeyed?
Unmatched.

4. Negative Thinking
I had a difficult season a few years back that many would call a “wilderness season.” During this time (being unemployed, on food stamps, and other government assistance), God exposed my thought life.
Proverbs 4:23 says:
“Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life.”
I didn’t want to admit it, but I was:
Complaining
Assuming the worst
Speaking death over my own future
Magnifying circumstances instead of God
Then the Holy Spirit convicted me with two words:
“Aiding and abetting.”
Every negative thought I partnered with was strengthening the enemy’s case against my destiny.
After receiving clarity on this, I was able to speak to my thoughts and be more reflective on what was going on in my mind. Romans 12:2 says that we become transformed by the renewing of our mind, which we do by reading the word of God.
5. Dissatisfaction with My Circumstances
This is subtle — and dangerous.
We think,
“If God would just fix this one thing, then I’d have peace.”
But Paul said he learned to be content with little and with much.
God told me:
“If you can’t worship Me in this season, you won’t worship Me in the next one either.”
Gratitude breaks spiritual blockages.
Contentment softens the heart.
And both make your spiritual hearing sharper.
6. My Own Expectations Made it Difficult to Hear God's Voice Clearly
This one hurts — because we all have expectations of how God should move.
But the Lord told me clearly:
“You’re getting in the way of what I’m trying to do because you won’t let Me do it My way.”
Sometimes God’s instruction doesn’t make sense until later.
Sometimes the step of obedience seems small or confusing.
But when you surrender your expectations, you give God room to bring the miracle.
7. Distractions
Scrolling.
Busyness.
Entertainment.
Numbing.
Avoidance.
Over-productivity.
These steal more spiritual clarity than we realize.
Some distractions look innocent.
Some look productive.
Some look like “self-care.”
But distractions keep us spiritually deaf. They often prevent us from addressing the very thing God wants us to do, resulting in procrastination and avoiding the thing He has asked us to be obedient in.
Holy Spirit has convicted me on multiple occasions that I was allowing distrations to derail the direction He wanted me to go.
And if you’re honest, maybe you are too.
When you silence distractions, your spiritual ears open again, and you’ll find it’s easier to walk in obedience.
What Happened After
When I surrendered these seven areas, so much changed in my walk with the Lord:
• I heard God’s voice more clearly
• I experienced more peace
• I felt spiritually stronger
• I received direction faster
• I stopped second-guessing myself and what God said
• I walked in deeper obedience
• I finally felt aligned with His Will and his plan
This is why I say confidently:
If God is convicting you of something — obey.
The clarity will come after the obedience.
What's next?

Final Prayer: Heavenly Father, strengthen my spirit man (or woman). Reveal what I need to lay down. Give me courage to obey. Sharpen my spiritual ears. Fill me with Your peace, clarity, and boldness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
